Numeracy

The Numeracy Program at Sacred Heart focuses upon the development of conceptual  understanding and procedural fluency. Students are actively engaged  in problem solving and reasoning and are encouraged to make connections  and communicate their knowledge through multiple representations  including technology.

A range of formative and summative  assessments  is  utilised to inform teaching and learning. Mathematical tasks are differentiated to meet the diverse needs of classrooms through the use of open ended and rich tasks. Programs such as those offered by G.A.T.E. ways form part of our extension programme.

Through learning Mathematics at Sacred Heart, the students will develop a clear  understanding of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability so the knowledge gained may be applied flexibly and creatively in problem solving situations and real life. Students will use Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning to become proficient in their Mathematical Learning.

Therefore:

  • Everyday experiences of students are used as a basis for meaningful Mathematical investigations, hence demonstrating the relevance of the Mathematics being learned.
  • Students should develop accuracy in the computational skills that they need and with such speed as is consistent with their ability and thought processes.
  • Students should appreciate and identify appropriate uses of Mathematics in a range of problem solving situations.
  • Students should be encouraged to plan possible solutions to problems and to gain satisfaction from this planning.
  • Students use mathematical knowledge and skills, in conjunction with other learning, to make decisions and communicate their methods and findings to others.
  • Students develop confidence and competence in mental, written and calculator computations and approximations.
  • Teachers provide an appropriate learning environment in which to cater for Individual differences.
  • Assessments of students' progress is seen as an on-going and integral part of the learning process.
